Wargaming An Apocalypse?

Hi!

While I've been pondering my Leviathan project I've been thinking of a way to represent the cataclysmic events of the surrounding lands of Aeroth.

Apocalyptic Vision

In Leviathan a magical seal has been broken by the elves causing the fallen princes to break free causing a literal hell on earth. The once green lands are now covered in polychromatic deserts and smouldering volcanoes, the cities shattered and crumbling ruins and the forests replaced with gigantic fungus growths that can spring up and vanish overnight.

This gives one a lot to work with scenery wise but getting decent rules for it may require a little extra work.

It also got me to thinking on other sorts of apocalypse that could feature in fantasy gaming ranging from meteor impact to ice age and all sorts of magical chaos. How does one represent them on the tabletop without bogging down the gameplay.

My curiosity has been well and truly piqued and I think I may have to have a go at getting some rules put together to represent these weird and not so wonderful events as they could add a lot of interest to the game, not to mention visual appeal!

If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to contact me with ideas!

All the best!

Mystery Revealed!

Hi!

Well my visit to Spirit Games went very well and I picked up quite a few bits and pieces that will be handy for several of the factions slated in for the projects start up in January!

Along with my purchases and continued bits box rummage I've managed to start up a new faction!

The Bloodkin are an extended clan of warped creatures descended from the spawn of fallen and humans. Bestial in appearance they rely more often on ambush, attacking with bows before closing for the kill.

I'm using a mixture of Gnolls to represent the beastly ones and thus far have a small selection of Chainmail miniatures and an old Ral Partha Balrog as well. I'm mid way through painting a leader figure up at present and hope to have some pictures up ASAP!

Heres a picture of one of them to show what they look like!

Off To Spirit Games Again!

Huzzah!

To celebrate the re-starting of my Leviathan project I'm off to SPIRIT GAMES in Burton upon Trent in the morning!

With a budget of £25 I'm planning on collecting up a mystery faction to start the ball rolling so keep your eyes peeled!

Spirit Games has been one of my favoured sources of miniatures for several years now as its got an amazing range of stuff and the service has been outstanding on every occasion that I've ordered anything from them and when I moved to the Midlands I made a point of visiting when I could!

Hopefully I will have some swag to show by this time tomorrow evening!

All the best!

Force Overview!

Hi!

Heres a quick overview of the forces I'm hoping to develop!

Children of the Worm

Undead followers of the Great Devourer and one of the fallen, the Children of the Worm compromise of a mixture of decaying zombies and monstrous wormlike creatures.

Elven Slavers

The elves of Aeroth are a twisted and evil race and make up for their lack of numbers with a selection of demonic servants. Groups of elves and their dire minions will often sally forth from their black obelisks to capture slaves for sacrifice.

Knights of the Eternal Light

The Knights of the Eternal Light are a group of templars who seek to turn back the tide of evil released by the fall of the elves. Comprising of a mixture of heavily armoured knights and retainers they also go into battle alongside animated statues from their temples.

Steppe Orcs

Followers of Gorath the orcs are a warlike race who more often than not fight from the backs of large warbeasts. They also bring an assortment of smaller beasts such as monstrous great orcs as well as the slave race of goblins.

Goblin Freedom Fighters

Not all goblins have been enslaved by the orcs. Some still hold out in their strongholds in the swamps that border the endless plains. Individually feeble the goblins make up for their lack of combat ability with great numbers. They are also supported by trolls, shambling beasts with little intelligence but fearsome combat skills.

Technomancer Guilders

The guild of technomancers are a dwarven group who rely on all sorts of ingenious contraptions to aid them in the exploration of Aeroth. Armed with black powder weaponry and alechemical devices and steam driven servitors they are few in number but also powerful.

Northern Barbarians

The untamed barbarians of the north are a wild people who worship the earth mother. Undisciplined warriors the barbarian tribes can tap into earthpower to warp their bodies into powerful avatars of destruction!

Grey Elven Scouts

The last of the elves untouched by the fate of their kin, the grey elves are rarely seen buy are now appearing in greater numbers. Armed with a variety of special arcane devices they seek to return Aeroth to its former glories.

Dwarven Expedition

The dwarven holds survived the cataclysm relatively intact but with supplies running low they have been forced to explore the new world outside. Sturdy and hard to kill they are solid warriors equipped with all sorts of well built weapons to aid in their mission.
The Fallen

The creatures of the abyss and the harbingers of destruction the fallen are a demonic horde that consist of a vast variety of hideous creatures ranging from hell hounds to large powerful beings born for war.

Pitiful Human Rabble

The humans of Aeroth suffered terribly during the cataclysm following the elves opening of the great seal. The pitiful survivors band together to scavenge whatever they can to survive. These pitiful creatures are often mutated and bands of them often come into conflict with the other denizens of the savage wastelands and ruined cities dotting the landscape.

Orcish Outcasts

The outcasts of orcish society are a pitiful collection of half breeds and are killed on sight by purebloods on sight. The bastard offspring of orcs, humans, goblins and elves these brutes range vastly in appearance and have to rely on all sorts of twisted creatures to support them in battle.

Daughters of Leviathan

Leviathan is a gigantic sea creature and one of the fallen. It constantly gives birth to monstrous creatures which swim to land and spawn their own beasts. No two are alike but all thirst after the flesh of living creatures.

Sea Devils

The sea devils are an aquatic race that were driven from the coasts of Aeroth centuries ago. The cataclysm heralded their return and their ships once again ravage the shores. A mixture of aquatic creatures and undead slaves these foul creatures seek to reclaim their old lands.

Harpies

The harpies live in vast aeries in the towering mountain peaks of Aeroth. Many of these aeries were destroyed by the dwarves settling the region but some still survive and others are being re-colonised. Decidedly avian in appearance the harpies are capable of flight and will often use this ability to perform hit and run attacks on unsuspecting foes.

The Horned Folk

In ages past the Horned Folk ruled Aeroth but the elves drove them from their lands eons ago. Driven into their subterranean barrows they slept away the centuries before re-emerging too once again contest the other races for supremacy. The horned folk are a large, hulking race that still rely on bronze weaponry and armour.

The People of the Moon

The people of the moon are a race of shape shifters. They long ago took to their sky arks to seek safer lands but have been recently spotted in the alpine forests of the far north. They have lost their ability to shift between human and wolf and are now stuck mid way. Over the centuries they have lost much of their humanity and now live for the hunt and to protect their territory from the incursions of others.

The Re-awakend Lizardmen

The Lizardmen of Kosh are the last of their race. The remainder of their kin was wiped out by the elves over a century ago. Long thought extinct, some have survived and now seek revenge on those responsible for the destruction of their culture.

Revised Forces!

Hi!

Well in keeping new found attempt to kick start my Leviathan blog again I've had a rummage through my previous posts and my bits box to see what forces will be turning up and heres the results in no particular order:

Children of the Worm
Elven Slavers
Knights of the Eternal Light
Steppe Orcs
Goblin Freedom Fighters
Technomancer Guilders
Northern Barbarians
Grey Elven Scouts
Dwarven Expedition
The Fallen
Pitiful Human Rabble
Orcish Outcasts
Daughters of Leviathan
Sea Devils
Harpies
The Horned Folk
The People of the Moon
The Re-awakend Lizardmen

As you can see theres literally TONS of stuff to do and at present I can honestly say not much of them are actually done but I have a plan!

I have still got my budget of £20 a month to spend on miniatures so will use this to buy a core warband for each faction. Each month I aim towards collecting and painting one of these warbands. In some cases this may only be a couple of miniatures while in others it may be quite a few.

Surprisingly I am not going to aim to get this started until the new year but I thought I would post a message of intent here to spur me into action!

Having examined my bits box I have found that theres quite a few useful bits and bobs in it that I can use to expand my forces and form the core of others. Some of the excess will be getting sold off and the profits will go towards more suitable miniatures while the rest will join the ranks of my warbands.

As you can see theres 18 months worth of warbands there for me to work on which is a tad daunting! I have decided to spend the remainder of this month and next setting up a poll to see which forces people want to see first and in what order I should paint them before cracking on with the actual work next year!

All the best!

Circular Thinking

Well its been ages since I did anything with this blog which I've come to realise was a real mistake as no matter what project I work on I find myself coming back to leviathan!

I had been working on a new project about collecting an army on the cheap and using Ganesha Games Song of Blades rulesets to play small skirmishes between warbands but the more I got into the project, the more I came to realise I should have just been posting my progress here!

So without further ado heres the first miniature I've got completed for my Children of the Worm warband:

Necromancer

Hes a bit of a proxy until I find a suitable leader for my warband but he will do for the time being! I've also got about half a dozen assorted barbarians to use as mortal followers which are in various stages of painting which I hope to be getting on with soon!

Now onto the rules!

Instead of using the core Leviathan rulebook I am using Song Of Blades and Heroes, I know I've been a bit dismissive of its simplicity before but I've come to think thats its strength! I will no longer need to spend ages trying to stat up new creatures as Song of Blades has loads to choose from and also has an online points calculator allowing you to stat up new models almost instantly.

Song of Blades and Heroes

Song of Gold and Darkness

Song of Wind and Water

The simplicity of the game, along with the small numbers involved will allow me to actually play some games, as for all the time Ive been working on this project I think Ive played Leviathan once! I will be working on some supplemental rules to allow large warbeasts to be included in games but thats for the future!

At present I want to get a core warband of the Worms followers sorted and then onto some of the other factions I've outlined earlier on the blog. I have started rummaging through my bits box to see what I have that will be usable and will update the blog ASAP with my findings!

Looking at how this project is developing has been a bit of an eye opener as I can now include warbands from Chronopia, Crucible or any other of the games I like!

At present I aim towards adding an update once a week here to try and spur me into action (and shame me if I don't get anything done!)

All the best!
