650 Point Orc Horde Progress Report Part 11

Not much of an update but heres a pic of the progress Ive made on the carnosaur:

Progress Of A Sort!

Ive added a second layer of reddish brown ink to the scales around the black patches of hide which has improved the look of the miniature greatly as well as applying some shading and started work on the harness and howdah.

Im not sure when my next update will be as I seem to have run out of steam on the Leviathan painting. If only it was in a smaller scale like 15mm as Ive been working on some sci-fi in that size and its proving to be far more appealing as I can paint several figures and vehicles to a good standard over the course of a day rather than spending weeks fiddling with big stuff!

Ive decided to take a bit of a break from Leviathan over the next month or so which will give me time to work on an illustration commission I have and paint some more 15mm Stainless Steel Rat while Im at it!

I hope to be back to the Leviathan stuff with gusto on the last week of August so until then all the best!

650 Point Orc Horde Progress Report Part 10

Im afraid I havent done very much painting for Leviathan over the last few days. I had hoped to get the whole worde finished by the weekend but seem to have stalled a bit.

Heres a pic of the carnosaur after I have started work on its hide:

Carnosaur Camo!

The textured hide of the model is making for an interesting effect when the black is applied, almost like volcanic rock. I may need to add some more ink to the beast as its currently looking a bit pale.

Hopefully I will be able to get on with it over the next day or so!

All the best!

650 Point Orc Horde Progress Report Part 9

Well after a small delay caused by reading the new Space Captain Smith book I am back in business!

Heres the first of the pics of my WIP orc carnosaurs:

Yellow Peril!

at present they have been undercoated white an then a base coat of golden yellow has been liberally brushed over them. Once they have dried out (which will take an hour or so as the Vallejo game colours paint tends to take quite a while to dry) I will give them a wash with a reddish brown ink. Alas that will be all I can do with them today as the ink was will take ages to dry but hopefully I will be able to crack on with them in the morning.

In the mean time I will finish off basing the lesser goblin rabble and may even try and finish the eye of Gorath thats been sat nearly complete for the last few months! More than likely I will work on some 15mm stuff for my Stainless Steel Rat stuff instead though!

I will post another pic this evening of the minis after they have had their ink wash!

All the best!

And as promised heres a quick pic of the carnosaurs now theyve had a layer of ink and a couple of layers of drybrushing:

Slightly Shaded Yellow Peril!

Next stage will be to add the lighter belly and the black backs!

A Small Break!

I had planned on starting work on my two carnosaurs today but have got distracted after spotting the newest Space Captain Smith book in my local bookshop! Its caused a small delay in painting work until I finish reading it and thus far its been well worth thew money (as per usual!) Toby Frost is rapidly becoming one of my favourite authors and the books are well worth looking out for!

Normal service will be resumed presently!

All the best!

650 Point Orc Horde Progress Report Part 8

Heres a quick pic of the completed goblin rabble!

I still need to finish the base and come up with some sort of tattered banner but its otherwise finished! Next up I need to get my orc carnosaurs done. I am going to attempt to speed up the process a bit by painting both of them at the same time. It may work or go horribly wrong but I really want to crack on with them. I have to do some gap filling with greenstuff this evening and will start painting them in the morning!

In the mean time Ive added a pic of some 15mm Stainless Steel Rat police types onto my other blog!

All the best!

650 Point Orc Horde Progress Report Part 7

Well its slow going here but I have managed to almost finish the shields on the goblin rabble!

Rabble Rousing!

Another View!

Oddly the rabble have thus far taken me longer to finish than some of the biggest orc warbeasts! To think I was actually thinking of fielding more than one of them! Madness!

I will attempt to finish the painting this evening and get on with the basing in the morning but I may be forced to take a small break!

All the best!

650 Point Orc Horde Progress Report Part 6

Just a quick update!

I have been working slowly on the lesser goblin rabble as theres so much detail to try and do justice but the good news is that I have finally reached the half way stage of painting.

I think my decision to attempt to give every shield a different pattern may have been somewhat foolish as its taking me ages to finish but the final piece will hopefully be worth the effort. If I am going to attempt to do another rabble I think I will give all the shields the same colour scheme and pattern as it will save loads of time!

I have also finished my first orc tracker miniature. Hes a really old savage orc by Citadel but fits in with some of the concept art from the old Anvil magazine. The orc trackers will be filling the scout/skirmisher function in the orc horde and will allow for some interesting new rules.

Orc Tracker

Shield Detail

In other news I have got the draft versions of about half of the orc warbeasts and new infantry units completed and will try to set some time aside in the morning to work on completing them and making a start on the remainder of the dwarven units!

All the best!

650 Point Orc Horde Progress Report 5

Just a quick update with a pic of my lesser goblin rabble. Its taken me a few hours to get this far and Ive only finished about a quarter of the shields. I suspect that it will be mid week by the time the rabble are complete!

I am trying to make sure the rabble fit in with the rest of my force by keeping the shields a mixture of mainly green and yellow with a few other colours mixed in here and there to add a bit of interest. Its proving to be a fun job (if a little time consuming!) and the rabble by Sassenach over on the Scotia-Grendel forum has been a real inspiration as the amazing job of managing to paint each shield differently with everything from Super Mario to the Mona Lisa! While I am not going to attempt anything quite so impressive, I do want to keep a bit of the chaotic rabble madness!

Rabble WIP!

I have also played a small skirmish game between my orcs and the dwarves. It resulted in a small orc victory with the dwarves being almost wiped out and their mighty Thunderhammer battletank got chewed on by my carnosaurs.

The game was loads of fun, although it took about two hours to play as I was constantly having to refer back to the rulebook but no more than ususal when trying out a new game. I have noted a few items needing work which I will add to the Scotia-Grendel forums Leviathan Errata thread but they are nothing major, just a few bits needing clarification!

I took loads of notes but no pics as some of the units were unpainted. I will get them written up and draw up some maps and add a full battle report as time allows!

All the best!

650 Point Orc Horde Progress Report 4

Well it only took an extra day to do but I have completed my orc infantry unit (it couldnt really be classed as an orc horde without any orcs after all!)

Orc Infantry!

The miniatures are a mixture of Heartbreaker (still available from both Spirit Games and Ral Partha Europe) and a single orc hero whos an old Citadel miniature which I picked up from Gateshead Gaming.

The unit is probably a bit heavily armoured but when their opponents are going to be dwarves they are going to need all the protection they can get!

I am making a start on the lesser goblin rabble next as the miniature is too tempting to have a go at!

All the best!

650 Point Orc Horde Progress Report 3

Its another mini update! I have got my goblin archer unit finished and the harpoon marker painted up too! There is still a bit to be done on the bases but they are more or less complete!

A goblin and the Harpoon!

The Completed Goblin Unit!

It remains to be seen how effective the unit will be against he dwarves heavier armour but a couple of games should determine how they should be used and if they need some extra numbers!

The orcs SHALL be done tomorrow even if I have to glue myself to my chair!

All the best!

650 Point Orc Horde Progress Report 2

Well Its been a bit of a busy day so not much painting has been done. Saying that I did manage to paint another goblin archer and undercoated an orc harpoon marker which I plan on using to replace cardboard counters as it looks better. I also finished off the two other goblin archers bases and heres a pic of my goblin archer unit. Ive got one more to do but am sure the unit will be completed tomorrow!

Goblin Archers!

The miniatures are a mixture of the old citadel regiments plastics and Heartbreaker. I believe both were sculpted by Kev Adams. I have some more archers to form a larger unit at a later stage which consist of a mixture of the old citadel and heartbreaker miniatures by both Kev Adams and Bob Olley which will look good once finished but they wont be seeing action till Ive got to the 1500+ points stage!

All the best!

650 Point Orc Horde Progress Report 1

Well its been a fairly productive day (for me anyway!) Ive got the bases completed and shields done for all my painted orcs, completed the bases for my lesser goblin wartower, based my two orc carnosaurs and even managed to paint a couple of goblins!

Blurry Goblins!

Apologies for the pictures quality! I will re-take it in the morning! I will try and get the two remaining goblin archers done tomorrow as well and hope to make a start on the last couple of orc infantry as well which will leave me with the fun stuff to do on the run up to the weekend.

All the best!

650 Point Orc Horde!

As promised heres a pic of my 650 point orc horde.

The Horde!

The force consists of the following:

1 Level 2 orc khan, medium armour, shield, 2 hand weapons

5 orcs with light armour, shields, hafted weapons, standard

6 goblins with shortbows

6 goblins with hand weapons and shields

2 orc carnosars, light armour, hand weapons and shields

1 lesser goblin rabble!

The horde comes to 650 points exactly and contains the required selections of one orc khan, two goblin units and one orc unit. I have found that following the force structure from the book is totally impossible as collecting a legal force at this level just wont work. Its looking like I will have to do a bit of work to create a more usable force structure.

At present the force listing may work when creating larger forces of 1500 points or above but otherwise its just a bit too simplistic. The force I selected will probably need re-doing as the lesser goblin rabble doesnt really fit in but I just wanted an excuse to paint one up!

I will post an update of my progress tomorrow (hopefully with both the goblin infantry units complete!) I hope to have the force completed by this time next week so wish me luck!

Next off it will be a case of cracking on with the 650 points of dwarves!

All the best!

Dwarven Heraldry

Ive been pondering making a start on my dwarves and am trying to decide on a colour scheme for them. The dwarves pictured in the Leviathan rulebook tend towards pinks and blues which isnt really my idea of what a dwarf should be dressed in, Instead I am taking the old imperial dwarves from past editions of fantasy battle as my guide and want to go for something suitably regimented to tie them all in and that makes their war machines stand out from other forces.

To help me decide I am starting to run a new poll for the month with some possible colour schemes.

In other news I have got most of my painted goblins bases finished now along with my lesser goblin wartower. I will post a pic of the entire 650 point warband featuring the entire line up both painted and unpainted. Over the coming days I will add a new pic each evening of the group showing my progress!

All the best!

Saturday, 4 July 2009

Heres some more pics of my current project:

Goblin Infantry

Carnodon Conversion

Goblin Archers!

As you can see the goblin archers are half done now and along with the swordsmen cover my two required goblin units for my force. Its looking like I will need 650 points per side to play a legal game and once my orc infantry are done I will just need to get a couple of carnosaurs painted to represent a small raiding party.

The carnodon rider is a slightly butchered goblin wolf rider by Marauder Miniatures which I got off ebay some time ago. I had been a bit concerned that he wouldnt work as a rider for the small goblin beasts but he looks rather good. I decided against using the goblin rider supplied with the carnodons as they were just too big and look more like orcs (oddly the resin goblin legs which are cast as part of the beast have five tows on one foot but only four on the other!)

I will try to update the progress of my 650 point force as I go!

Comparing Stuff

Well Im back in Worcester and have finally managed to get chance to update the blog a bit!

Its been FAR too ho to do any painting over the last couple of days but heres a pic showing the various sized beasts Ive completed for my orc horde so far:

Group Shot!

In the background theres the mighty Titanosaur, the middle has a Necrosaur with harpoon and the front has the Carnosaur. I also added an orc and a goblin to give some impression of the scale of the beasts!

I will try and get the rest of the horde glued together so I can add a group shot of the lot of them this evening. After finding how good the lesser goblins banners look I am planning on adding some more impressive ones to the Titanosaur to mark it as the Khans personal warbeast.

Plans for today are to mount the lesser goblin beast and get its basing done and get some of my notes written up!

All the best!
