Last Post Of 2010

Well its been an eventful year gaming wise which involved not much painting or gaming sadly but next year promises to be far more interesting!

The Leviathan project is really starting to gather steam and I have some good ideas for what I am going to be getting up to in the coming year and have set myself a rather large challenge which will see me painting over 100 infantry and cavalry and goodness knows how many large monsters and vehicles, not to mention designing and sculpting a whole lot more!

I suspect that targets will shift somewhat but I am determined to get on with the work in hand!

I will be back in Worcester on the 2nd of January and will be cracking on with the Technomancer Guilders ASAP! I have a mk2 Golem underway at present, along with a Technomancer to lead the force but still need to find some suitable infantry so will be perusing the web to see what I can find!

All the best to everyone!

Poll Closed!

Well the poll has now closed and the winning force is the Technomancer Guilders!

I will be starting work on them the first week of January with an aim to getting a small force painted and converted by the end of the month!

Following that the rest of the factions will be painted in the following order:

Dwarven Expedition
Steppe Orcs
Sea Devils
Children of the Worm
Daughters of Leviathan
The Lizardmen
Northern Barbarians
Goblin Freedom Fighters
Elven Slavers
Knights of the Eternal Light
The Fallen
The People of the Moon

That will leave me with enough to do till at least February 2012 and the rest will be getting looked at once I've finished the herculean task of collecting and painting the rest!

Thanks to everyone who took part in the poll and watch this space for developments!

All the best!

An Updated Map Introduction

I've been thinking of updating the old Leviathan map with something that covers more of the lands of Aeroth. I was originally just going to go for a basic black and white linework one but spotted THIS POST over on Blease World which resulted in a rather nice city layout in 2mm scale:

Aegean Town in 2mm By Steve Blease

Further research resulted in this impressive piece by Eli over on I SEE LEAD PEOPLE:

Martian City By Eli Arndt

I am now thinking of using a somewhat simplified variation to represent the lands of Aeroth. Each city would have to be represented as a few buildings but it could look rather eye catching!

I think I would need to use a decent size of board to represent it but I am up for a bit of a challenge! I may have a dry run over on my OTHER BLOG to represent a sci-fi city to work out any kinks in the plan but we shall see how things develop!

All the best!

Map Of Aeroth

Heres a map of Aeroth I got from the rulebook! (I Just noticed its actually spelled Aerath! Oops, oh well I will continue calling it Aeroth as I'm used to it!)

As you can see it gives a general overview of the continent but the background material has a host of fascinating locations not shown here so I plan on redrawing it with locations such as the Crystal Gardens, the ruins of Koth, the Orcs sacred city and the abandoned Dwarf hold of Dum Morak.

The poll is coming to an end in a couple of days and its looking like folks want to see lots of Dwarves first!

I've been working on a little concept art for the Technomancer Guilders involving a new unit type in the form of Ironclad Infantry, Guilders who march into battle in steam powered armour which has been developed during the Technnomancers experiments into developing the Mk2 War Golems which form the majority of their armed forces. I will be attempting to sculpt a few of these heavily armoured types too and will of course be posting my progress here!

In the mean time I hope everyone has a good boxing day!

All the best!

5000 Page Views!

Well its come as a bit of a surprise but I've reached the 5000 mark on the page views for the blog here!

Thanks to everyone whose taken a peek at my random ramblings over the last twelve months or so and hopefully I will have lots more to show in the new year!

Hope everyone has a great Christmas and Santa brings a load of swag to add to the lead mountain!

All the best!

Tuesday, 21 December 2010

Well its been snowing for most of a week here now and by the looks of things my Scotia Grendel order wont be coming in before Christmas.

I am off to Portsmouth on Thursday so theres not much time to get painting done but I have made a start on a mk2 Wargolem. As the Dwarven expedition will be mainly equipped with tanks and artillery, along with the occassional mk1 Wargolem, I thought that my Technomancer Guilders needed a bit of a different look.

Despite being also being dwarves, I wanted them to have a more technological feel to them in keeping with the background material so they are getting a selection of the mk2 Wargolems!

I will try and get a work in progress picture up over the next day or so but I doubt I will be getting much more work done on the project until the new year (although I am going to be getting a fair bit of concept sketching done!)

All the best!

Forge Magazine Articles 2

Thanks to Tony Harwood, operator of the fine Dampf's Modelling Page blog, I've managed to get hold of all the issues of Forge and Anvil magazine!

Heres the second in a series of Leviathan articles from them, in this case a bit of a background story written by Bill King, author of the Felix and Gotrek books!

I will be adding the rest of the articles over the coming days!

Anvil Magazine Articles!

I've been fortunate to get hold of an article about the development of Leviathan as featured in the old Anvil magazine so here it is:

Folks may recognise some of the illustrations from earlier posts but the actual article itself is rather interesting and has some rather good ideas that may need expanding upon!

Possible Orc Creature Proxies!

Heres a pic of some Growler miniatures I painted for the sci-fi wargame VOR a few years back:

Sculpted by Kev Adams, the same fellow who produced many of the orc warbeasts for Leviathan I think they could make quite nice savage orc beasties!

Mike Nelson, creator of Vor is actually looking for sponsorship to get the new edition of the rules released. More information can be found HERE. Although its a sci-fi set, its really rather good and has some real possibilities!

Progress Update!

Alas theres no sign of the Scotia Grendel parcel as yet but hopefully it will arrive before the end of the week. To be honest its just as well it hasn't arrived as I have a dissertation to hand in for university on Thursday!

I have been putting a little thought into the background of the game and how it an be built on and have decided that the Earthpower supplement I have been pottering away with over the last year or so should be set fifty or so years after the events outlined in the original rulebook.

This will allow me to bring in new units and factions without too much hassle and can give a really interesting new spin on the setting!

I will be fleshing it out over the coming weeks but I hope to be able to include a more detailed map of Aeroth soon so folks can see whats being fought over and just how much damage the sundering of the great seal caused!

As can be seen on the cover, and mentioned throughout the text itself, the land of Aeroth is now a blasted desert, where once mighty cities and sprawling forests stood so theres plenty to work with!

Till then all the best!

Feeling Nostalgic!

I've been having a bit of a reminisce about all the games and miniatures I used to have when I was growing up and have found myself getting a bit nostalgic for a game of Flintloque.

Its had a bit of a mixed press over the years as the sculpt quality can vary vastly but I have fond memories of spending my hard earned cash on orcs and elves from the long defunct Macs Models in Edinburgh.

It was, along with Leviathan and Kryomek, one of the first systems I tried other than GW and I always enjoyed the rules and somewhat characterful miniatures.

Alas I sold off my entire collection years ago when I left home but seeing theres a third edition out I may be tempted to have a look at it in the new year. I doubt I will make many purchases as my budget is already struggling under the large Leviathan projects I have been working on on the run up to the new year but I may well buy a couple of packs and the Death in the Snow version of the rules to give me the opportunity to game the undead against the elves and relive the nostalgia!

Enough navel gazing and back to business though as the poll seems to be indicating that the Dwarves are what folks want to see first, closely followed by the Orcs. This as already mentioned fits in rather nicely with my Old Project Challenge over at Tabletop Gaming News and will give me the opportunity to get a couple of starter forces put together.

I suspect this will keep me busy until February at least as theres some big resin bits needing painted but after that I will be moving onto the next force which at present is a three way split between the Dwarven Technomancers, Daughters of Leviathan and Sea Devils.

I still plan on starting small and forming a small warband for each faction using pre-existing miniatures but want to beef these up with some big creatures sculpted by myself! I am keeping the designs of these beasts to myself at present but will be revealing more in the new year with some teaser images which will be making a periodical appearance amongst my other posts!

So keep your eyes peeled for updates!

All the best!

An Order!

Ive placed an order with the chaps at Scotia Grendel for an assortment of bits and bobs that will aid me to complete my old project challenge!

I have ordered the following:

6 Orc Necrodon riders with spears
6 Goblin Carnodon riders with bows
3 Dwarf organ guns
2 Dwarf wargolems.

This will give me all the bits and bobs I need to complete two 1000 point forces for Classic Leviathan once I've had chance to raid my storage boxes in my parents attic for the remainder of the force!

Hopefully I will get the order in the next week or so, so I can get on with the project! In the meantime I may have a go at converting a Carnodon that I've had kicking round for a while into a Goblin character figure and then theres the Mk2 Dwarven Golem I have been meaning to finish painting too...

All the best!

Looking For Articles!

I am on the look out for any Leviathan related articles out there, especially any from the old ANVIL magazine!

ANVIL Magazine

If anyone has any painted pictures of Leviathan or Grendel stuff please let me know and I will post them here, it doesn't matter if they are being used for Leviathan or not!

I also had a bit of a giveaway a while back where I sent out a load of miniatures to the sites followers in celebration of the blogs 100th post and was wondering if anyone fancies sending me a pic or two of the resulting paint jobs!

I hope to be able to update with some more pictures of painted stuff next week, along with a progress report on my old project challenge and an update on how the poll is going!

All the best!

Leviathan Goodness!

While on the lookout for some Leviathan images I was directed to PAINT SPLATS blog.

He's got some really cracking images of some vignettes he produced for Anvil magazine and heres some examples

Grendel Tower

Leviathan Scene

Truly inspiring stuff! The work in progress shots as well as some close ups are all over on his blog and its well worth a look!

Tabletop Gaming Old Project Challenge

I've decided to enter the Tabletop Gaming Old Project Challenge!

Its been set up to get folks to take a look at a project thats been on their workbench for quite a while and I thought it would be ideal to spur me into action with my Leviathan stuff.

I've set myself the challenge of painting up 1000 points worth of Dwarves and Orcs by the end of February next year (handily they are also the front runners on the poll at present too!)

Further info can be found HERE!

Heres a quick breakdown of the forces:

1 Level 2 Hero with Thunderhammer battletank . 195

5 Dwarves with spears, medium armour, shields and standard 174

5 Dwarves with crossbows 185

War Machines

2 Multi Barrelled Grenade Launchers 140

6 crew 90

2 War Golems 212

GRAND TOTAL: 996 Points

1 Level 2 Hero with a Necrosaur, medium armour, spear and shield 183

1 Level 1 Hero with Necrodon, light armour, 2 handed weapon and shield 57

Infantry and Cavalry

5 goblin carnadons, hand weapons, shields and shortbows 160

5 orc necrodons, light armour, shield and spear 200

2 orc carnosaurs, hand weapons, shields, standard 165.5

1 Necrosaur with harpoon 215

GRAND TOTAL: 1000.5 Points

That should give me plenty to work on while incorporating some of the stuff I already have painted!

All the best!

Leviathan Musings And An Unexpected Decision!

Well the voting on the poll continues apace with the Dwarves front runners, closely followed by the Steppe Orcs.

While I've been contemplating my new Leviathan project I had a look over my old plans for where I wanted to get my old Leviathan project to go and was saddened to see that my plans to get sizeable warbands put together for each faction never really got off the drawing board.

This, I've decided will not do! I am determined that each of the small warbands I have detailed previously should go beyond just the half dozen models I had intended and should be expanded to a more reasonable host!

This may take me longer to achieve than originally planned but I believe its going to be worth the trouble!

I had planned on using the Leviathan rulebook as the basis for these warbands but have decided to run with Song Of Blades for small skirmishes and Wargames Unlimiteds NO QUARTER ruleset to represent larger scale battles.

This will allow me to start small and expand the forces as I go and still allow me to get a great deal of customisation into the game!

The Elementalist Games!

I've been working on my model making and have a finished maquette. He's a bit of a concept piece to show what the four city states will be able to field:

I will be adding some more pictures to the blog as and when I get them done!

Wargaming An Apocalypse?

While I've been pondering my Leviathan project I've been thinking of a way to represent the cataclysmic events of the surrounding lands of Aeroth.

Apocalyptic Vision

In Leviathan a magical seal has been broken by the elves causing the fallen princes to break free causing a literal hell on earth. The once green lands are now covered in polychromatic deserts and smouldering volcanoes, the cities shattered and crumbling ruins and the forests replaced with gigantic fungus growths that can spring up and vanish overnight.

This gives one a lot to work with scenery wise but getting decent rules for it may require a little extra work.

It also got me to thinking on other sorts of apocalypse that could feature in fantasy gaming ranging from meteor impact to ice age and all sorts of magical chaos. How does one represent them on the tabletop without bogging down the gameplay.

My curiosity has been well and truly piqued and I think I may have to have a go at getting some rules put together to represent these weird and not so wonderful events as they could add a lot of interest to the game, not to mention visual appeal!

If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to contact me with ideas!

Mystery Revealed!

Well my visit to Spirit Games went very well and I picked up quite a few bits and pieces that will be handy for several of the factions slated in for the projects start up in January!

Along with my purchases and continued bits box rummage I've managed to start up a new faction!

The Bloodkin are an extended clan of warped creatures descended from the spawn of fallen and humans. Bestial in appearance they rely more often on ambush, attacking with bows before closing for the kill.

I'm using a mixture of Gnolls to represent the beastly ones and thus far have a small selection of Chainmail miniatures and an old Ral Partha Balrog as well. I'm mid way through painting a leader figure up at present and hope to have some pictures up ASAP!

Heres a picture of one of them to show what they look like!

Off To Spirit Games Again!

To celebrate the re-starting of my Leviathan project I'm off to SPIRIT GAMES in Burton upon Trent in the morning!

With a budget of £25 I'm planning on collecting up a mystery faction to start the ball rolling so keep your eyes peeled!

Spirit Games has been one of my favoured sources of miniatures for several years now as its got an amazing range of stuff and the service has been outstanding on every occasion that I've ordered anything from them and when I moved to the Midlands I made a point of visiting when I could!

Hopefully I will have some swag to show by this time tomorrow evening!

Force Overview!

Heres a quick overview of the forces I'm hoping to develop!

Children of the Worm

Undead followers of the Great Devourer and one of the fallen, the Children of the Worm compromise of a mixture of decaying zombies and monstrous wormlike creatures.

Elven Slavers

The elves of Aeroth are a twisted and evil race and make up for their lack of numbers with a selection of demonic servants. Groups of elves and their dire minions will often sally forth from their black obelisks to capture slaves for sacrifice.

Knights of the Eternal Light

The Knights of the Eternal Light are a group of templars who seek to turn back the tide of evil released by the fall of the elves. Comprising of a mixture of heavily armoured knights and retainers they also go into battle alongside animated statues from their temples.

Steppe Orcs

Followers of Gorath the orcs are a warlike race who more often than not fight from the backs of large warbeasts. They also bring an assortment of smaller beasts such as monstrous great orcs as well as the slave race of goblins.

Goblin Freedom Fighters

Not all goblins have been enslaved by the orcs. Some still hold out in their strongholds in the swamps that border the endless plains. Individually feeble the goblins make up for their lack of combat ability with great numbers. They are also supported by trolls, shambling beasts with little intelligence but fearsome combat skills.

Technomancer Guilders

The guild of technomancers are a dwarven group who rely on all sorts of ingenious contraptions to aid them in the exploration of Aeroth. Armed with black powder weaponry and alechemical devices and steam driven servitors they are few in number but also powerful.

Northern Barbarians

The untamed barbarians of the north are a wild people who worship the earth mother. Undisciplined warriors the barbarian tribes can tap into earthpower to warp their bodies into powerful avatars of destruction!

Grey Elven Scouts

The last of the elves untouched by the fate of their kin, the grey elves are rarely seen buy are now appearing in greater numbers. Armed with a variety of special arcane devices they seek to return Aeroth to its former glories.

Dwarven Expedition

The dwarven holds survived the cataclysm relatively intact but with supplies running low they have been forced to explore the new world outside. Sturdy and hard to kill they are solid warriors equipped with all sorts of well built weapons to aid in their mission.
The Fallen

The creatures of the abyss and the harbingers of destruction the fallen are a demonic horde that consist of a vast variety of hideous creatures ranging from hell hounds to large powerful beings born for war.

Pitiful Human Rabble

The humans of Aeroth suffered terribly during the cataclysm following the elves opening of the great seal. The pitiful survivors band together to scavenge whatever they can to survive. These pitiful creatures are often mutated and bands of them often come into conflict with the other denizens of the savage wastelands and ruined cities dotting the landscape.

Orcish Outcasts

The outcasts of orcish society are a pitiful collection of half breeds and are killed on sight by purebloods on sight. The bastard offspring of orcs, humans, goblins and elves these brutes range vastly in appearance and have to rely on all sorts of twisted creatures to support them in battle.

Daughters of Leviathan

Leviathan is a gigantic sea creature and one of the fallen. It constantly gives birth to monstrous creatures which swim to land and spawn their own beasts. No two are alike but all thirst after the flesh of living creatures.

Sea Devils

The sea devils are an aquatic race that were driven from the coasts of Aeroth centuries ago. The cataclysm heralded their return and their ships once again ravage the shores. A mixture of aquatic creatures and undead slaves these foul creatures seek to reclaim their old lands.

The harpies live in vast aeries in the towering mountain peaks of Aeroth. Many of these aeries were destroyed by the dwarves settling the region but some still survive and others are being re-colonised. Decidedly avian in appearance the harpies are capable of flight and will often use this ability to perform hit and run attacks on unsuspecting foes.

The Horned Folk

In ages past the Horned Folk ruled Aeroth but the elves drove them from their lands eons ago. Driven into their subterranean barrows they slept away the centuries before re-emerging too once again contest the other races for supremacy. The horned folk are a large, hulking race that still rely on bronze weaponry and armour.

The People of the Moon

The people of the moon are a race of shape shifters. They long ago took to their sky arks to seek safer lands but have been recently spotted in the alpine forests of the far north. They have lost their ability to shift between human and wolf and are now stuck mid way. Over the centuries they have lost much of their humanity and now live for the hunt and to protect their territory from the incursions of others.

The Re-awakend Lizardmen

The Lizardmen of Kosh are the last of their race. The remainder of their kin was wiped out by the elves over a century ago. Long thought extinct, some have survived and now seek revenge on those responsible for the destruction of their culture.

Revised Forces!

Well in keeping new found attempt to kick start my Leviathan blog again I've had a rummage through my previous posts and my bits box to see what forces will be turning up and heres the results in no particular order:

Children of the Worm
Elven Slavers
Knights of the Eternal Light
Steppe Orcs
Goblin Freedom Fighters
Technomancer Guilders
Northern Barbarians
Grey Elven Scouts
Dwarven Expedition
The Fallen
Pitiful Human Rabble
Orcish Outcasts
Daughters of Leviathan
Sea Devils
The Horned Folk
The People of the Moon
The Re-awakend Lizardmen

As you can see theres literally TONS of stuff to do and at present I can honestly say not much of them are actually done but I have a plan!

I have still got my budget of £20 a month to spend on miniatures so will use this to buy a core warband for each faction. Each month I aim towards collecting and painting one of these warbands. In some cases this may only be a couple of miniatures while in others it may be quite a few.

Surprisingly I am not going to aim to get this started until the new year but I thought I would post a message of intent here to spur me into action!

Having examined my bits box I have found that theres quite a few useful bits and bobs in it that I can use to expand my forces and form the core of others. Some of the excess will be getting sold off and the profits will go towards more suitable miniatures while the rest will join the ranks of my warbands.

As you can see theres 18 months worth of warbands there for me to work on which is a tad daunting! I have decided to spend the remainder of this month and next setting up a poll to see which forces people want to see first and in what order I should paint them before cracking on with the actual work next year!

All the best!

Circular Thinking

Well its been ages since I did anything with this blog which I've come to realise was a real mistake as no matter what project I work on I find myself coming back to leviathan!

I had been working on a new project about collecting an army on the cheap and using Ganesha Games Song of Blades rulesets to play small skirmishes between warbands but the more I got into the project, the more I came to realise I should have just been posting my progress here!

So without further ado heres the first miniature I've got completed for my Children of the Worm warband:

Hes a bit of a proxy until I find a suitable leader for my warband but he will do for the time being! I've also got about half a dozen assorted barbarians to use as mortal followers which are in various stages of painting which I hope to be getting on with soon!

Now onto the rules!

Instead of using the core Leviathan rulebook I am using Song Of Blades and Heroes, I know I've been a bit dismissive of its simplicity before but I've come to think thats its strength! I will no longer need to spend ages trying to stat up new creatures as Song of Blades has loads to choose from and also has an online points calculator allowing you to stat up new models almost instantly.

Song of Blades and Heroes

Song of Gold and Darkness

Song of Wind and Water

The simplicity of the game, along with the small numbers involved will allow me to actually play some games, as for all the time Ive been working on this project I think Ive played Leviathan once! I will be working on some supplemental rules to allow large warbeasts to be included in games but thats for the future!

At present I want to get a core warband of the Worms followers sorted and then onto some of the other factions I've outlined earlier on the blog. I have started rummaging through my bits box to see what I have that will be usable and will update the blog ASAP with my findings!

Looking at how this project is developing has been a bit of an eye opener as I can now include warbands from Chronopia, Crucible or any other of the games I like!

At present I aim towards adding an update once a week here to try and spur me into action (and shame me if I don't get anything done!)

An Updated Update!

Well ive had a bit of a soul search and have decided that I AM going to continue with 28mm scale fantasy gaming!
I had set up a 15mm scale blog with the intentions of starting to collect some armies but have found that theres just not the choice that I'm looking for!

Instead I have decided to start a different project on a similar theme: Collecting an army on the cheap! Ive found that my gaming budget, not to mention time to paint are at a real premium at present.

So Ive got THIS PROJECT underway. I intend to collect an army on a budget of £10 per month with the requirement that I dont buy anything new until the last load is painted!

There will be some Leviathan crossover too which I will post here as well so the blog wont be entirely dead!

Real Life Intrudes And A Question!

Apologies for the complete lack of updates here on the blog but Ive been working full time over the last couple of months at an animation company in Bristol which requires me to do a rather lengthy commute leaving me with precious little time to get on with any real hobby time!

To add to the woes my computer has finally died and I havent been able to replace it yet. (I am currently having to beg the use of my long suffering girlfriends laptop!)

Worry not though! I have been getting a bit of painting done here and there and now have one Children of the Worm follower, a mounted Elven character and a second elf, this time with a powerlance finished!

I am also pondering having my own foray into the miniatures world in a small way (literally and figuratively!) and am looking for a bit of feedback from you chaps!

Essentially I am looking at the possibilities of 15/18mm scale as I cant afford the expense of comissioning a range in 28mm scale.

There seems to be a real renaissance going on in the 15mm Sci-fi market but the fantasy one seems to be sadly lagging with the existing manufacturers producing rather stereotypical fantasy fare based on the Lord of the Rings type of background. I want to go for something far more interesting, more akin to Leviathan and Chronopia with its original take on existing races and monsters. The cheaper cost per pack will hopefully allow you to collect an entire army for considerably less than the larger scales.

I aim to get three to four races as an initial release. Each race will initially have a couple of heroes, two to three troop types and a warbeast or two with more races to follow, along with a wide assortment of new units and monsters for existing forces.

Its early days at the moment but any feedback would be most welcome!

Off To Spirit Games!

I am nipping off to Spirit Games in the morning to spend some pennies on an assortment of bits and bobs and will no doubt post pictures of them when I get chance! Spirit Games is one of my regular suppliers of miniatures and is well worth looking in as theres tons of good stuff there and they do a fantastic mail order service too!

Ive actually finished painting something too! The first of my Children of the Worm proxies is just awaiting basing and then I will try and get on with some more before having a bash at some Chronopia miniatures too!

I will post some pics once the base is finished this evening!

Four A Miniatures

I thought I would post a quick bit of info on Four A Miniatures, a company set up by long time miniature collector and all round good sort Andy Coleman.

The company has a rather nice assortment of miniatures in development including some of the following:

Dwarf 2

Theres several more dwarves in development which will please the Chronopia players out there!

I will be keeping an eye on the range for some suitable bits and bobs for my Leviathan project!

Alas I am off on holiday again tomorrow (its a hard life!) but will get some more work done sketching and hopefully a bit of sculpting too. I have the first of my Children of the Worm miniatures almost finished and will post pictures of him as soon as I get him finished!

All the best!

Tuesday, 8 June 2010

Heres the second in my series of articles on other wargames that are sadly now out of production but still well worth collecting and gaming!

Chronopia is a direct descendant of Leviathan having many of the original creative team from the older game develop the new one. I remember it being released and reading a review in an independent gaming magazine whose name I forget but seeing the fantastic artwork by Adrian Smith coupled with the chunky and interesting miniatures pictured in the article really got me wanting to get a copy of it.

I still own the complete rulebooks but as with so many other games I never actually managed to play it! Alas its now gone with the end of Target Games and then Excelsior who managed to secure the license for a while. Some of the miniatures are still available from Prince August, the company who cast all the miniatures but I found them a bit on the pricey side these days. Not to be put off I intend on rummaging through my bits boxes and scouring ebay and local gaming stores with the intention of eventually collecting up some reasonable forces for each of the factions.

At the same time I may end up using different companies miniatures as some of the existing ranges are a bit on the bulky side! On a brighter note Four A Miniatures have started producing some rather nice dwarves which are perfect for the dwarven clans featured in the original game!

My next update will hopefully cover some assorted bits and bobs for an assortment of stuff and hopefully some painted miniatures will turn up at some point too!

All the best!

Crucible: Conquest of the Final Realm

Crucible is another of those rulesets that came out and were actually rather good but for a variety of reasons never took off. In this case it was the closing of FASA that spelled the end of the game.

Set in a high fantasy world populated by some rather unusual races the game centres on the exploration of Crucible, a fantastic continent populated by savage orcs. The game itself features some nice concepts and the actual forces are original re-thinkings of the original fantasy fare. The orcs are noble warriors styled after the Zulus while the elves are brutal imperialists and the dwarves are formed of nomadic clans.

I have a plan of integrating many of these forces and units into the Leviathan game world as theres some great ideas and models available from Ral Partha Europe.

Unfortunately only three of the races, the orcs, human Principate and the Royal elves received nearly complete model ranges but theres plenty of opportunity to convert from other ranges!

I will feature some assorted pictures of the miniatures as soon as possible along with some bits and bobs for Chronopia, sculpting gubbins and hopefully a long promised battle report of the playtest version of Levyathan!

All the best!

Blog Overload!

I am planning on doing some blog culling over the next day or two as at present I have three fantasy ones and its all a bit too much to keep regular updates on them all. This blog will therefor be getting a bit more stuff in the form of the occasional Chronopia article along with Crucible and even some sculpting bits and bobs!

I thought I would get the ball rolling with a couple of articles on Chronopia and Crucible to give folks an idea about them!

All the best!

I am looking for the contact email for Neil Dunlop, the original writer of the Leviathan ruleset!

I want to pick his brains about the ruleset to see if I can uncover a copy of the long lost Earthpower supplement as well as a points calculator and any other useful stuff I can get my hands on!

I believe hes posted a comment on my blog before but without contact details so if you are reading this Neil or anyone knows him could they please contact me!

Children of the Worm Update!

Well Ive been into Spirit Games this afternoon and picked up one or two bits and bobs including some troops for my Children of the Worm warband!

I picked up a pack of Ral Partha war monks to act as a more heavily armoured unit:

War Monks

As my planned force hasnt got any ranged troops I picked up his fellow:

Hes a Mage Knight metal Night Stalker and I am planning on using him as a follower of Bethshakai, the Hidden One. Bethshakai is one of the Fallen and his followers are experts in assassination and espionage and are often seen as part of other forces. I still need to stat im up but he will eventually have poisoned weaponry and an infiltrate/camouflage ability.

I also found a wierd worm miniature from the call of the Cthulu range but I dont have any pictures as yet. Its not too bad a miniature but it needs some conversion to fit in with my concept of the Children of the Worm!

I will try and get some pictures taken in the morning!

Children of the Worm Developments!

Well I am pretty much set on the miniatures for my Children of the Worm warband and will be ordering them in the next day or so.

As things stand I am ordering six of Heresy Miniatures Dark Brethren Tunnel Guards to act as mortal followers of the Worm:

Mortal Followers

I also plan on ordering six of their rather excellent Ghouls as degenerated minions:

Ghoulish Minions

My current leader will be the Mage Knight Metal necromacer from Ral Partha Europe:

My monsters will be coming in the form of a trio of the Mage Knight Metal Crypt Worms.

Crypt Worm

This will give me the basis of a small force. I still need to locate some nice zombies to act as fodder and a larger monster but I plan on having a go at sculpting one. At present I am unsure whether to try a few Sand Devils or a Carmine Terror...

Once the swag has arrived I will post some unpainted pictures and set to painting stuff! In the meantime I will have a rummage through my much diminished lead pile and see what other stuff I can find of use!

All the best!

Almost Tumbleweedlike...

Well I'm mid way through my deadlines for my university work so the site has been a tad quiet of late! Hopefully from next week I will be able to spend some time getting some content added!

I hope to get some playtest games of Levyathan in as well as spending a little time painting some bits and bobs (pictures will of course be added asap!)

While I am pondering the rules for the Earthpower supplement I am hoping to convert some forcelists for Wargames Unlimited's No Quarter fantasy ruleset. My thinking behind this is that I really want to get some new forces put together and I havent got a points calculator worked out yet for Leviathan so will go for an alternative one!

This conversion should allow me to bring in some interesting new opponents for my existing forces!

All the best!

Leviathan Skirmish Inspirational Stuff!

While perusing the Lead Adventure Forum I spotted THIS TOPIC

DonVoss, the poster has been rummaging through his lead mountain to find some suitable gangs for Song Of Blades and Heroes and has collected some rather unique forces.

Spider Cult by DonVoss

Theres several more forces on the topic which is well worth a peruse but I really like the Spider Cult! I have looked at SOBH before but found the rules to be slightly too simple. With a skirmish game I want to have a bit more depth but thats just my opinion as SOBH has received really good reviews and many folks really enjoy it.

This is just the sort of sized force I am hoping to collect and game with in the skirmish version of Leviathan and will be on the lookout for some more suitable characters for my Children of the Worm warband! Alas almost all my miniature pile has been sent up to Edinburgh to reside with my folks so I will be perusing the various manufacturers!

All the best!

Classic Leviathan: An Update!

Ive had a quick chat with the chaps over at Scotia Grendel and they do have plans for some new stuff for the Classic Leviathan rules! It may take quite a while but there are plans for a Darkwing model as well as some new orcs!

In the meantime I am going to have a go at re-sculpting some of the monsters currently available as the elves beasts are currently a bit poor. This will involve me trying to design and sculpt a new dragonbane, new earthbound (including a new monster choice in the form of the earthbound support powerlance platform) and possibly a dragon too!

In other news I am still working on the skirmish rules and hope to have the Children of the worm miniatures bought and painted within the next month or so. For the basic followers I am planning on using some of the excellent Heresy Miniatures cultists and ghouls:

Heresy Cultists

With a little work to them to add some veils and stuff they should make perfect Children of the Worm and with the addition of a few Reaper characters and monsters I should have a decent force!

All the best!

Levyathan: The Forces

Heres the first of the promised articles on the new Levyathan game (Its not a typo but the old English spelling!)

I will go onto the background in more depth at a later date but I think a quick primer on the various races is worth a quick look at too. The four races of Theia, the world that Levyathan is set in are all bred from the same genetic stock. Centuries of selective breeding has resulted in four different races:

The Humans:

Men are the most versatile of the castes. They originally served as a worker class to the other races but the coming of Levyathan has meant that many have fled to Thule, a mountainous land to the far north. They worship the Earth Mother and their witches can use earthpower, or Vril, to shape the land to their needs.

The basic human infantry are the Clansmen. Armed with staff slings which use a nasty magical cocktail which explodes on contact they form the bulk of the infantry.

Red Branch are the elite infantry, capable of channeling the earthpower to transform themselves into huge twisted creatures. Armed with an assortment of hand weapons they are dedicated shock troops.

Hunters are young warriors given explosive tipped spears to take on enemy war machines and monsters. This is often a bit of a suicidal undertaking but gives the humans some nice cheap anti-tank weapons!

Humanity fields an assortment of vehicles and elementals when it goes to war and the Atlas Golem is the most common, using its mighty stone fists to crush infantry and war engines alike.

The Apollo Golem is more of a support choice with its ability to bombard enemy positions with huge boulders.

Wartowers are wheeled war engines with a mighty onager mounted on them, along with some nasty close combat weaponry for dealing with opposing infantry. They also have limited troop transportation abilities which allows them to carry two stands of infantry onboard.

The Raven is a specialised troop transport capable of carrying four stands of infantry into battle. Its only weapons are close combat and also fields a boarding ramp so the crew can assault opposing war engines.

The basic human artillery piece is the Onager, a wheeled construction capable of firing indirectly over long distances.

The Trebuchet is a fixed artillery piece with the ability to hit just about anywhere on the table but its lack of movement means its deployment must be carefully thought out.

There are several more interesting human war engines ranging from Oculus Golems to the fearsome Bellatrix but they will be covered at a later date!

I will be covering the orcish horde next so keep an eye out!

Back From Holiday!

Just a quick update! Ive just got back from a rather amazing holiday to Wales and will be getting my broadband installed on Monday so hope to have regular service returned by Tuesday rather than having to make do with rubbish mobile broadband!

I have decided to categorise my Leviathan blog a bit as theres three different games (thus far!) covered by it. Firstly theres the classic edition involving large resin beasties, the skirmish version I've been playing around with over the last month or so and finally the new Leviathan game under development.

Speaking of which I will be beginning a series of articles on the game mechanics, background and forces over the next week or so (I hope to give a brief overview of the individual forces tomorrow at some point!) I will make a point of playing some games and posting battle reports with my thoughts on the individual units and forces too!

With the classic edition I have still got a load of miniatures to paint up over the holidays and finally the skirmish game needs work done on it and the warbands need collecting up and painting.

Alas its just getting to my most busy time of the academic year so the next month or so will only see one or two updates a week but come June I will be adding them daily (fingers crossed!)

All the best!

Leviathan: First Impressions

Well I've received the playtest version of the new 10mm Leviathan rules and thought I'd post my initial impressions!

The game itself has changed greatly both in rules and scale. Instead of a 28mm scale game like warhammer the new version is a 10mm scale mass battle ruleset. I cant compare it to GWs warmaster as it has a more combined arms, World War 2 feel to it which is an interesting departure from the usual fantasy game with its massed lines of infantry and cavalry.

Leviathan has a mixture of infantry (mostly armed with a variety of ranged weapons ranging from bows to staff slings and magical Vril lances), monsters such as demons and elemental golems, warmachines (what I am personally most excited about!) and artillery.

Because of the more WW2 approach the miniatures are based on the new lipped style 50mm round bases that have become popular over the last few years. The combination of the bases and infantry fighting in squads along side tanks and towering monsters should make for a visually appealing and hopefully interesting game!

Its almost a cross between sci-fi and fantasy and I am really looking forward to getting my hands on the miniatures!

The background has been changed significantly with the back story coming from the discovery of a lost renaissance manuscript postulating that there is a twin of earth doomed to an apocalyptic war with fantastic races all bred from the same human stock. When I first heard the plans for this I was rather disappointed as I really liked the original background. However upon reading through it I have found it to be really rather engaging and an interesting departure from the usual tolkienesque fantasy fare (ala GW!)

Over the coming weeks I will break down my entries into covering individual sections of the rules and backstory but I personally am quite excited to see Leviathan is getting a revamp!

I hope to have a bit of an update soon with a brief overview of the rules and a background article on the setting itself so I am off to do some serious reading! If you have any questions I will be more than happy to pass them on to John or make a bit of a stab at answering it myself!

All the best!

Friday, 26 March 2010

Well I've had some great news! Theres a new version of Leviathan in the works!

John Robertson, creator of the original Leviathan wargame (along with Chronopia and a large list of other wargames) is working on a 10mm scale mass battle version along with Mark Brendan, the writer of the sadly unreleased Empire Chronopia.

There will be a completely new miniatures range to accompany it covering the Orcs, Elves, Dwarves and Barbarians with supplements covering new units and even new forces slated for release afterwards!

I will be interviewing John in a couple of weeks time on the new game along with a few other questions on his career and so on and have decided to ask you folks what questions you would ask him!

Please feel free to post any questions (relevant ones only please!) on the comments section of this entry and I will peruse them to see what I can steal!

I am getting a playtest version of the rules in a week or so and will be posting steady updates on the game itself and the development of the miniatures!

All the best!

And The Winner Is...

Well thanks to everyone who voted on the poll and despite a strong showing for all the current factions the winner is the Children of the Worm!

Ive begun looking for some suitable proxies as well as having a scribble at creating some rough rules but it will have to wait until Ive moved house at the end of this month and I can spend a bit of time working on the force.

Apologies for everyone whos waiting on their Leviathan freebie but preparing for the move has taken up my time! I will get them packaged on Monday and hope to have them sent soon after!

All the best!

Wednesday, 3 March 2010

Well it looks like I will have to hold off on updating the blog for the next few weeks as my landlord has just contacted me to let me know that my flat is being repossessed! I have anywhere between a week and two months to find a new flat, a somewhat vague timetable!

I am off to look at some flats tomorrow and hope to move somewhere new in the next few weeks but until then I will have to spend my time packing my tat!

I will still try and get some swag posted out to you all at the weekend!

More Painted Stuff and Giveaway Update!

Alas I seem to be having a bit of difficulty contacting the blog followers to get their addresses so I can send out some Leviathan swag so please post a reply if you want some free stuff!

In more cheery news the chaps at Scotia Grendel have generously offered a 20% discount on the Leviathan range to a lucky blog follower or contributer and I will be drawing a name out of a hat once Ive got folks contact details!

In the meantime Ive nabbed a picture of Mr Wigglesworths rather fantastic orc carnosaurs from over on the Scotia forum:

Mr Wigglesworths Carnosaurs

I love the classic green and yellow paint scheme straight from the Leviathan rulebook cover. The beady eyes of the carnosaur are also worth mention as they really bring the model to life!

Its going to be interesting to see what his completed force looks like as hes off to a really great start!

Also Ive been working on a bit of an interim warband to keep me occupied while the poll is running and heres the first of the painted miniatures for my half orc outcasts:

Half Orc Outcast

The Outcasts are a ragtag mixture of halfblooded offspring of orcs, goblins, humans and elves. Despised by the great hordes, halfbloods are killed whenever encountered. Other races also hate them due to their parentage, the Outcasts often gravitate to the fallen for protection and can often be found employed as disposable fodder in the armies of darkness.

Some enterprising or stubborn halfbloods refuse to join the ranks of the fallen but band together and form raiding parties which prey on the ruined settlements of Aeroth. My force represents one such warband and thus far consists of a half orc leader with his warped scavenger, several half orc and goblin minions along with a rogue female great orc to act as muscle.

Having raided an orc burial mound the Outcasts shaman has raised a couple of orcish skeletons to act as terror troops (I'm almost finished painting the first of them!) along with some rather rusty armour and arcane weapons. The force will be rather rag tag and savage looking to tie in with their rather unsavory practices of grave robbery and looting the dead on abandoned battlefields.

I will be working on some stats for an Outcast faction over the next few weeks so I can play some games using it!

All the best!

Well its taken a year but Ive finally reached my 100th post. Its been a bit of a mixed year gaming wise but hopefully I will get chance to crack on with my Leviathan project now Ive revised what I was doing and got myself a bit better organised!

Ive decided to celebrate by having a bit of a giveaway of some of my excess Leviathan stuff. I will be emailing all the blogs followers over the next day or so and arranging to post out some goodies!

My cunning plan has several purposes, firstly I think folks deserve a bit of a thank you for following (and even reading) my ramblings, it will hopefully get a few more people interested in the setting and finally it will allow me to unload some of my lead and resin mountain!

My only proviso to the giveaway is that the recipients have a go at painting the stuff and sending me a few pictures of their attempts!

The blogger contacting system doesnt seem to be working so if you are interested in getting some Leviathan freebies just check my email address on my profile page and I will see what I can organise!

All the best!

Possible Miniatures Part 3 and Swag Givaway Preview!

Well heres the next part of my ongoing ponderings into the possible miniatures I will be using for my assorted forces for Leviathan!

The Light Elves

There is mention of several of the elven houses who resisted the ruinous downfall of their kin in the background of Leviathan and I want to represent them in some way. Unlike the usual bright and noble elven nobles of other fantasy systems I want them to look like grizzled survivors of the apocalypse, possibly intent on reclaiming their lost legacy.

I had considered painting up some dark elves in slightly different colours such as grays and off whites but want them to be significantly different in appearance from their fallen kin.

Ive had a look at the the celtos range from Brigade Games which have some excellent characters such as these:

Alas their infantry arent as good so I may just pick up a few force leaders and characters from the range.

Another option is the old Heartbreaker sculpts. Ive got about a dozen dragon kin and normal elves from them and they are really nice, and unusual looking. Unfortunately I havent got any pictures of them just now but will see if I can rummage some out.

Reaper also has loads, as does Ral Partha Europe but they tend to be a tad generic.

Ral Partha Regular Elf Sergeant.

As the elven slavers are going to be quite characterful I want to make their good kin look equally interesting. Its still all a bit vague at the moment so I may have to go back and ponder them some more!

In other news my next post will be my one hundredth!

As a bit of a celebration I will be having a bit of a Leviathan based givaway to each of the blogs followers with swag ranging from Lesser Goblin Wartowers to Dwarven Steamtanks and infantry!

More information to follow!

All the best

Possible Miniatures Part 2!

Well its a bit later than promised but heres some more ponderings on what miniatures I plan to use to represent various warbands!

Elven Slavers

The Elves in Leviathan are all degenerate drug addicts and as such I want my slavers to look the part. Alas the official Leviathan ones are a bit rubbish to be honest with rather large heads so I will have to look further afield for some suitable proxies.

My first port of call has been Ral Partha Europe who have a vast selection of stuff and the old Crucible range has some very nice possibilities such as these:

Possible Powerlancer

Blade Maiden

Blade Maiden 2

They also have some interesting demons that could make good support for the elves:

The first one is perfect for some sort of lesser beast but the big monsters, while looking fantastic are more suited to the Sea Devils I plan on working on at a later date!

Next up theres Reaper with their large selection too and after a little rummaging I found these which might be suitable:

They also have some rather nice hell hounds:

Hell Hounds

Much as I hate to admit it, Games Workshop also have some which might well see use too such as the witch elves and even the cold one knights:

Cold One Knights

I will continue pondering my elven troops in my next update!

All the best!
